Literacy
Volunteers of Waterville's tutors are trained to
provide student-centered tutoring services. Each tutor works with his
or her learner to identify both short and long term goals and creates
individualized lesson plans that focus on meeting those goals. Students
and tutors use real-life materials, such as newspapers, job
applications, recipes, and voting ballots, in their lessons.
Our tutors
receive approximately 15 hours of training to become
certified ProLiteracy tutors. We provide opportunities for
continued education and recertification through our workshops.
Each tutor commits approximately 1 - 2 hours weekly working with their
adult learner. Many of our tutors have been with Literacy
Volunteers for years, enjoying the reward of improving the quality of
life of their students through the gift of literacy.
